The 2025 WADA Prohibited List will soon come into force on 1 January 2025.
Several notable amendments have been made in the World Anti-Doping Agency (‘WADA’) Code Prohibited List 2025.
The amendments to the WADA Code are:
Addition of certain prohibited substances (Prohibited In- and Out-of-Competition)
S0. Non-approved substances
Ryanodine receptor-1-calstabin complex is responsible for the release and storage of calcium to maintain skeletal muscle function. In relation to this, in the latest amendment, the class of ryanodine receptor-1-calstabin complex stabilizers are included into S0, with examples such as S-107 and S48168 (ARM210).
S3. Beta-2 Agonists
Due to a recent study revealing potential performance-enhancing effects from doses of inhaled formoterol, the latest amendment imposed a new 12-hourly dosing interval, which is consistent with the manufacturer’s recommendations, to prevent the attainment of ergogenic effects. However, the maximum dosage over 24 hours remains at 54 micrograms.
S4. Hormone and metabolic modulators
In the latest amendment, several examples were added to different substances prohibited under the class of hormone and metabolic modulators for clarity. In regard to hormone substances, elacestrant was included as an example of anti-estrogen substances.
The substance of metabolic modulators also sees mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c added as an example as an activator of the AMP-activated protein kinase, as well as S519 and S597 included as examples of insulin-mimetics which binds to insulin receptors, replicating the effects of insulin action.
S5. Diuretics and masking agents
Xipamide is newly added to the List as an example of a diuretic.
Addition of certain prohibited substances (Prohibited In – Competition only)
S6. Stimulants
In regard to stimulant substances, Hydrafamil, also known as fluorenol which was initially classified under S6.B as Specified Stimulants are moved to S6.A as Non Specified Stimulants, due to its higher potency than modafinil, and the fact that it is not licensed for medical purposes.
Two stimulants, midodrine and tesofensine were also included in S6 as specified stimulants. It is worth noting that in the latest amendment, the stimulant guanfacine was clarified as a not prohibited stimulant.
Prohibition in Certain Sports
Beta-blockers are no longer prohibited in any skiing and snowboarding disciplines.
Clarification of Prohibited Methods
It has been clarified that pertaining to the manipulation of blood and blood components, the collection of it which includes red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma, and peripheral blood stems via apheresis, is allowed at donation centres that are accredited by the country’s regulatory authority.
Addition towards Monitoring Program
Fentanyl and Tramadol are added to keep an eye on Out-of-Competition usage.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the 2025 WADA Prohibited List introduces significant amendments aimed at enhancing the integrity of competitive sports and safeguarding athletes’ health. By addressing advancements in scientific research, clarifying existing rules, and including new substances and methods, WADA demonstrates its commitment to staying ahead in the fight against doping. Stakeholders, including athletes, coaches, and medical professionals, must remain informed and vigilant as these changes take effect on 1 January 2025, ensuring compliance and fostering a fair and transparent sporting environment.
