Richard Wee (Managing Partner)

Richard graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of London in 1996, completed the Certificate in Legal Practice in 1998 and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1999.

Believing in professional development, Richard continues to acquire new skills and knowledge. He holds a certificate in Strategic Conflict Management for Professionals, awarded by the Singapore Mediation Centre (2011), a certificate of attendance for the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre workshop (2014) awarded by the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) (now known as the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC)) and a certificate from the Southeast Asia Regional Anti-Doping Organization (SEARADO) (2018) for Result Management for Anti-Doping.

In 2016, Richard obtained the Certificate of Sports Arbitration from AIAC, a qualification which is a preparatory step towards appointment as a Sports Arbitrator.

In 2019, FIFA and Football Association of Malaysia appointed Richard to the Appeals Committee of the National Disputes Resolution Chambers (NDRC).

In the early days of Richard’s career he specialised in litigation, and over the years his practice evolved to include corporate matters. Richard’s background in litigation has placed him in a unique position to see through issues for clients, providing strong affirmative advise and strategies to avoid the pitfalls of litigation.  He has carved out an effective legal service for corporate matters and is sought after by his clients. Richard’s portfolio in this area includes matters of mergers, take overs & acquisitions of companies, joint venture exercises, multi-layered contracts & international commercial transactions.

Other than corporate matters, Richard is also engaged for government related work. He is currently assisting the Federal Government (on pro-bono basis) to offer advise and comments on the blueprint for esports in Malaysia, engaged by a State Government to draft enactments for stadium management, rules & regulations for esports and also engaged to assist a State Government form a special esports Tribunal.

Richard’s practice nonetheless, still revolves around dispute resolution. His prowess in litigation is well known. He has appeared at every level of Court in Peninsula Malaysia and other then the Courts, Richard has also appeared in the Industrial Court, Sports Tribunals, Housing Tribunal and Arbitration. Often described as a general litigator, his wide knowledge of many industries makes him a favoured lawyer for companies with wide ranging commercial issues.

Richard has experience in Property transactions, having acted for Property Developers, individuals in sub-sales and tenancy matters. His uniqueness lies with his ability to serve the clients for Corporate, Litigation or Property Conveyancing matters.

Richard is a well-known advocate for the expansion and improvement of sports law and esports law in Malaysia. He co-founded the Sports Law Association of Malaysia (SLAM) in 2016, organised several annual Sports Law Conferences, conducted many training & seminars all over Malaysia, and is an invited speaker at Universities and Colleges on that area of law.

Richard has featured on more than one occasion on BFM (Business FM) Radio to speak about, amongst other things, Sports and esports matters. He has also appeared in international television giving interviews about his experience with Everton Football Club.

Despite his busy practice, Richard has found time to pen a chapter about Malaysia’s Sports Law for the International Encyclopedia of Sports Law by Wolters Kluwer. Together with Dr Zaidi Hashim (Dr Jady), Lesley Lim, Saphna Ravichandran, Bryan Boo and Vincent Lim, Richard co-authored the said Malaysian chapter.

At his previous firm of Messrs MahWengKwai & Associates (MWKA), Richard led his Sports Law Practice Group to win consecutive awards (2018 & 2019) at the annual Asian Legal Business (ALB) Malaysia Law Awards for the Sports Law Firm of the Year Award.

Legal500 has described him as an expert for Sports Law, while ALB in 2017, acknowledged Richard’s team at MWKA as a ‘Best Boutique’ firm for Sports Law.

In December 2017, Asia Law Portal named Richard as one of the 30 People to Watch in the Business of Law in Asia in 2018.

Richard is passionate about serving the Bar and was the Secretary of the Malaysian Bar Council from 2013-2015. He was an elected Councillor of the Malaysian Bar Council from 2011-2016.  He was also an elected member of Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee from 2005-2010.
