Richard Wee (Managing Partner)

Richard graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of London in 1996, completed the Certificate in Legal Practice in 1998 and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1999.

Believing in professional development, Richard continues to acquire new skills and knowledge. He holds a certificate in Strategic Conflict Management for Professionals, awarded by the Singapore Mediation Centre (2011), a certificate of attendance for the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre workshop (2014) awarded by the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) (now known as the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC)) and a certificate from the Southeast Asia Regional Anti-Doping Organization (SEARADO) (2018) for Result Management for Anti-Doping.

In 2016, Richard obtained the Certificate of Sports Arbitration from AIAC, a qualification which is a preparatory step towards appointment as a Sports Arbitrator.

In 2019, Taylor’s University appointed Richard as a member of the Legal Profession Advisory Panel, which he continues to serve to date.

In 2019, the Society of Inns of Courts of Malaysia admitted Richard as a member.

In 2019, FIFA and Football Association of Malaysia appointed Richard to the Appeals Committee of the National Disputes Resolution Chambers (NDRC). Richard continues to be a member of NDRC in 2021 and 2022.

In 2020, the Ministry of Youth and Sports appointed Richard to the advisory Panel of Experts.

In 2020, the National Sports Institute appointed Richard as a committee member of the Sports Technology Research and Development Funding Committee.

In 2020, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) appointed Richard Wee Chambers as the regulatory partner of the Fintech Booster Programme, a capacity-building platform for fintech start-ups and companies.

In 2021, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) appointed Richard as a member of the Panel of Experts of the Research and Development Fund for Technology.

In 2021, Richard was admitted to the Association of Anti-Bribery Management System Practitioners of Malaysia.

In 2021, the Union Cycliste Internaationale (UCI) appointed Richard as a member of the Disciplinary Commission and the UCI Arbitral Board, respectively.

In 2022, Richard was appointed as a member of the Industrial Advisory Panel of the Faculty of Law, Multimedia University.

In the early days of Richard’s career he specialised in litigation, and over the years his practice evolved to include corporate matters. Richard’s background in litigation has placed him in a unique position to see through issues for clients, providing strong affirmative advise and strategies to avoid the pitfalls of litigation.  He has carved out an effective legal service for corporate matters and is sought after by his clients. Richard’s portfolio in this area includes matters of mergers, take overs & acquisitions of companies, joint venture exercises, multi-layered contracts & international commercial transactions.

Other than corporate matters, Richard acts on behalf of numerous government agencies involving projects, research, regulations, compliance, and investments. His involvement includes proffering advice, drafting agreements, providing assistance in regulatory and compliance issues.

Richard acts as an advisor to the Government in numerous Panel of Experts and committees.

Richard’s practice nonetheless, still revolves around dispute resolution. His prowess in litigation is well known. He has appeared at every level of Court in Peninsula Malaysia and other then the Courts, Richard has also appeared in the Industrial Court, Sports Tribunals, Housing Tribunal and Arbitration. Often described as a general litigator, his wide knowledge of many industries makes him a favoured lawyer for companies with wide ranging commercial issues.

Richard has experience in Property transactions, having acted for Property Developers, individuals in sub-sales and tenancy matters. His uniqueness lies with his ability to serve the clients for Corporate, Litigation or Property Conveyancing matters.

Richard is a well-known advocate for the expansion and improvement of sports law and esports law in Malaysia. He co-founded the Sports Law Association of Malaysia (SLAM) in 2016, organised several annual Sports Law Conferences, conducted many training & seminars all over Malaysia, and is an invited speaker at Universities and Colleges on that area of law.

In esports, Richard is regarded as one of the pioneers of esports law. He is often sought after by the esports community for numerous legal matters.

Richard has featured on more than one occasion on BFM (Business FM) Radio to speak about, amongst other things, Sports and esports matters. He has also appeared in international television giving interviews about his experience with Everton Football Club.

Despite his busy practice, Richard has found time to co-author a chapter about Malaysia’s Sports Law for the International Encyclopaedia of Sports Law by Wolters Kluwer.

Richard had previously led his team to win consecutive awards (2018 & 2019) at the annual Asian Legal Business (ALB) Malaysia Law Awards for the Sports Law Firm of the Year Award.

He has been described by Legal500 as an ‘Expert for Sports Law’ and acknowledged by ALB in 2017 for his ability to spearhead a ‘Best Boutique’ practice for Sports Law.

In December 2017, Asia Law Portal named Richard as one of the 30 People to Watch in the Business of Law in Asia in 2018.

In 2020 and 2021, Richard Wee Chambers was awarded by ALB, Malaysia’s Sports Law Firm of the Year.

Since 2019, Richard Wee Chambers continue to receive nominations at the ALB Malaysia Law Awards for numerous categories, including categories for the Firm of the Year for Dispute Resolution, Employment, and Corporate Matters.

Richard is passionate about serving the Bar and was the Secretary of the Malaysian Bar Council from 2013-2015. He was an elected Councillor of the Malaysian Bar Council from 2011-2016.  He was also an elected member of Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee from 2005-2010.

He continues to serve the Bar as Chairperson of the Professional Standards and Development Committee which manages the Bar’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scheme.

Outside his practice, Richard spends much time with his family and supports Everton Football Club of the English Premier League.
